We cordially invite you to attend our upcoming TDWI Toronto Chapter meeting on May 27, 2010. We are pleased to welcome Mark Peco and Gary Saarenvirta to our next session on May 27th They will provide us with their thoughts and insights on what constitutes successful elements for deployment of Analytics in organizations
This presentation will provide a framework that positions and relates how the core concepts that make up the BI and Analytics landscape interact with each other and how they are related to the strategic and tactical goals of the organization. Following the first part of the presentaion Case examples will be presented and discussed.
The following questions will be addressed.
How do the concepts of BI and Analytics relate to what the organization is trying to accomplish?
At its core, what exactly is Analytics?
Do the terms “Business Intelligence” and “Analytics” really mean the same thing or are they different?
Can the terms “Reporting” and “Analytics” be used interchangeably?
How do other disciplines such as Business Measurement and Continuous Improvement fit into the picture?
How do you position and define these various related terms to create alignment different disciplines within your organization?

Abstract
The Business Intelligence and Analytics disciplines are currently flooded by a wide variety of terms and concepts. Many of these terms are only partially understood and quite often used inconsistently. However, the basic concepts underlying the terms must be understood by all stakeholders across the technology to business spectrum in order for organizations to optimize their investments and expected outcomes.
This presentation will provide a holistic framework that positions and relates how the core concepts that make up the BI and Analytics landscape interact with each other and how they are related to the strategic and tactical goals of the organization.

Presenter Bio
Mark Peco, CBIP is an experienced consultant, educator and manager. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in engineering from the University of Waterloo and has led numerous consulting and integration projects helping clients adapt to fundamental shifts in business models and requirements.
Mark is a partner with InQvis, a strategy and technology consulting firm based in Mississauga and is also a faculty member of the Data Warehousing Institute (TDWI). He is a regular speaker at TDWI World Conferences and also lectures and leads workshops for major companies on a global basis. Mark helps organizations deal with the challenges, opportunities and risks associated with implementing “intelligent” business solutions.
He has specific experience working with managers and executives from technical and business backgrounds helping them develop integrated approaches to team building and problem resolution. Mark has obtained the Certified Business Intelligence Professional (CBIP) designation at the mastery level.
Gary Saarenvirta is the CEO and founder of Makeplain Corporation, a professional consultancy specializing in the integration of advanced analytics, business process and financial measurement.
As an internationally recognized expert in the profitable application of Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics, Gary Saarenvirta has achieved hundreds of millions of dollars in bottom-line results for his clients in the banking, insurance, retail, telecommunication and manufacturing sectors.
Gary is the former head of IBM Canada’s analytics and data warehousing practices, and was also at the helm Loyalty Consulting Group, providing analytical services for one of the world’s most successful coalition loyalty programs, the AIR MILES® Reward Program. Prior to his leadership role at Loyalty Consulting Group, Gary built the company’s first generation data warehouse and BI platform. Gary holds a graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies.
