Presentation: “Creating One Version of the Truth" by Ken Raetz, IT Manager LBMC Technologies, LLC |
Abstract
We see the banner waved all around DW/BI projects… “One Version of the Truth!” People are tired of having multiple answers to their business questions. Often our tendency as IT practitioners is to think we can solve this problem with just more technology. We create an Enterprise Data Warehouse, scrubbing and transforming the data, with a neatly organized star schema that the end users can build queries and reports with to their hearts content. However, there is an important ingredient to a successful DW/BI project that must not be forgotten – Requirements and Definitions! Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
In this presentation formed out of years of business experience across a variety of industries, we will look at some of the reasons that DW/BI projects fail, what makes business requirements and definitions so important, and explore some case studies of actual clients that reveal the importance of understanding the business (and getting the business to understand the business). In addition to a new-found appreciation for gathering business requirements, you will come away from this presentation with some tips and methods for being an ally with your customer in the DW business requirements gathering process. |

“Introduction to Data Vaults” by Dan Petit, IT Consultant |
Abstract
Data Vaulting is a hybrid relational database DWH technique combining aspects of traditional 3NF database models and star-schemas. It is designed to provide a storage point for all data in the business domain (including historical data and “bad” data). In this presentation, we will explore the basic tenets of data vaults, learn when and why to use them (and when not to), and complete a simple transformation of a 3NF database to a data vault. |
