Abstract

From its origins in manufacturing, workflow systems, Business Process Reengineering, Total Quality Management and Six Sigma, over the last twenty years, Business Process Management (BPM) has evolved beyond technologies for process automation and methodologies for process efficiency improvement.

These days, more and more business leaders are starting to recognise and adopt a holistic approach to BPM that consists of four highly intertwined components: strategy, people, processes (as organisational assets) and technology for BP support, including process-oriented BPM systems and, in recent times, BI tools.

This presentation aims to expand the boundaries of BI and BPM integration beyond technology. It will cover a very brief overview of the latest thinking in BPM before focusing on different types of business processes (BPs) and their associated information and decision support needs. This will be then used to demonstrate how to determine the most appropriate type of BI solution for different types of BPs, in order to maximise possibilities for business value creation and increase usability of both BI and BPM technologies.

Key take-home lessons for BI practitioners: a roadmap of BI and BPM integration beyond technology, including the most appropriate strategies for ongoing BP improvement, BI and BPM value creation and the most suitable BPM/BI training method.
